The Beautiful village of Ripley is a much-visited location in North Yorkshire due to its close proximity to Harrogate, Knaresborough and Leeds. The delightful village is visually stunning with stone cottages with a very European feel. Many people frequent the Boar's head which is named in remembrance of King Edward the Third when he fell of his horse in the nearby woods and was viciously attracted by a wild boar. In stepped the local hero Thomas Ingilby who speedily drew his sword and decapitated the boar.

The graceful Yorkshire village is much celebrated for Ripley Castle which has been in the hands of the Ingilby family since the beginning of the fourteenth century. Although then it was more of a stately home, many fortifications have taken place over the years such as the keep which was added by William Ingilby in 1548. The lives of the Ingilby's is an eventful life. Francis Ingilby who was a priest, spent most of his time in a pit that was made on his behalf, to escape prosecution when Elizabeth the first declared it to be illegal to be a catholic priest in England. During the seventeenth century, David Ingilby was accused of an attempted murder plot of royalty but escaped capture and spent the rest of his time on the run evading life behind bars.

Many visitors frequent the castle observing the many attractions such as the actual priests hiding hole, a fine collection of paintings and pottery. The grounds of the castle have splendid nature trails and walks and well as beautiful gardens but beware of the wild deer. The castle now has a tearoom housed in the Courtyard
